Batman Begins (Blu-Ray)
I like to begin my reviews by making bold statements that might catch your eye and trigger a response. Either you agree whole-heartedly or you think I'm hanging out my fuckin' tree. Either way, I've forced an opinion from you. This review is exactly the same.
This time my statement is this; “Batman is the best comic book hero ever. FACT”. Spiderman is a dork in red and Blue spandex. Superman takes it in the ass (You think that's gel he's using to style his hair-do?). The Green Lantern couldn't even light his own farts.
Nah, there is none better than the Bat. With his cool gadgets, vehicles and weapons, he's very much the James Bond of Comic book stars.
As you can tell, I like Batman. Especially some of Frank Miller's Graphic Novels like Year One and The Dark Knight Returns. So, I felt it was about time the caped Crusader had a film that lived up to his mantle. Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer delivered it.
The film starts with a young Bruce Wayne falling down a well in his garden and breaking his arm. The action jump-cuts to an older Bruce Wayne(Christian Bale) breaking six other guy's bones in a Tibetan Prison. Not yet Batman, but the will is there - A shadowy man in a suit calling himself Ducard (Liam Neeson) sees the great potential in Bruce and offers him a path. He must seek out Ra's Al Ghul (Ken Watanabe) who will provide him with the skills to fight injustice.
Once trained Bruce realises that Ra's Al Ghul wants him to lead his men to Gotham City and burn it to the ground. When he refuses, things turn ugly and Bruce makes his escape.
Back in Gotham, Bruce asks the head of his family's business(Rutger Hauer) for a job. He's sent to Lucius Fox's (Morgan Freeman) department where his true intentions become clear. He's looking for some cool weaponry. Fox shows him around the applied sciences and the treasures stored within. It's here, he gets the suit and the new Batmobile -the Tumbler.
All kitted up, Batman befriends Sgt. Jim Gordon(Gary Oldman) and tries to unravel the plot between Dr. Crane (Cillian Murphy) and Falcone(Tom Wilkinson).
Oh yeah and he's got girl trouble with Rachel Dawes too (Katie Holmes).
One thing should instantly strike you about the above synopsis. The wealth of A-list Hollywood celebrities on show. I'm not talking about your famous faces; Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise. But real authentic, honest-to-goodness Thespians. Each brings a little bit of class to their character. They even have Ken Watanabe in a minor minor role. (He was the only reason for watching Last Samurai).
With the epic twisting storyline, there's no time for star spotting though, as you'll be sucked right into the movie. The ingenious conspiracy to poison Gotham's water supply with a hallucinogenic drug is slowly revealed. With a shock twist at the end where a certain character reveals himself to be more than we first assumed.
Chris Nolan didn't use his I-max cameras whilst making this, so you're not going to get the same clarity as with Dark Knight on Blu-ray. But where the HD really works in this film is with the car chase over Gotham's rooftops. Watch each individual slate fly into the air as the Tumbler tears them up.
With this and the Dark Knight as evidence, I can't see how you could argue that Batman isn't the best. But, please, if you want to comment – click below.
Verdict 10/10
Better than Dark Knight. And that's saying something.
